Chandrayaan-3 Successfully Lands, Embarking India on a New Lunar Odyssey

In a historic achievement that resonates with the aspirations and capabilities of 1.4 billion Indians, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has triumphed with the successful soft landing of Chandrayaan-3 near the Moon’s South Pole on 23 August 2023 at 18:04, making India the first country in the world to do so. 

The resounding success of this mission marks a momentous leap forward in India's space exploration and represents a significant milestone for the global space community. This mission embodies India's commitment to push the boundaries of human knowledge and technical progress. The mission's success reflects the tireless efforts, dedication, and innovative spirit of the scientists and engineers at ISRO.

About Chandrayaan 3:

Chandrayaan-3 is a follow-on mission to Chandrayaan-2 to demonstrate end-to-end capability in safe landing and roving on the lunar surface. It consists of Lander and Rover configuration and was launched by LVM3 from SDSC SHAR, Sriharikota on 14 July 2023. Chandrayaan-3 consists of an indigenous Lander module (LM), Propulsion module (PM) and a Rover with an objective of developing and demonstrating new technologies required for Inter planetary missions. The stated mission objectives of Chandrayaan 3 are : (i) To demonstrate Safe and Soft Landing on Lunar Surface (ii) To demonstrate Rover roving on the moon and (iii) To conduct in-situ scientific experiments.

Prime Minister's Message:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the remarkable feat of Chandrayaan-3, stating, "Chandrayaan-3's triumph mirrors the aspirations and capabilities of 140 crore Indians. To new horizons and beyond! Proud moment for India." He further remarked, "this moment is the call of India's ascending destiny. The first light of success in the dawn of the ‘Amrit Kaal’ has showered this year. We took a pledge on Earth, and we fulfilled it on the Moon."

ISRO's Director's Statement:

Speaking on the momentous occasion, ISRO's Director, S Somnath, extended his gratitude and admiration to the dedicated individuals who contributed to the success of Chandrayaan-3. "The success of India's third lunar mission is due to the contribution of so many people in the past. We should dedicate Chandrayaan-3's success to the entire scientific community of ISRO," he said.

Russia’s support:

Russian President Vladimir Putin was among the first world leaders to congratulate India after Chandrayaan-3 made a soft landing on the moon’s surface. In a message to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Russian President called it a big step forward in the exploration of outer space and, a testament to the impressive progress made by India in the scientific and technological sphere. Russia’s State Space Corporation Roscosmos has also extended its congratulations to ISRO after the successful launch of Chandryaan-3. Congratulating ISRO on the successful landing, Roscosmos added that the exploration of the Moon is an important endeavor for all mankind as in the future, it can be turned into a platform for the further research of space.
